The Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 promise to be Green Games, with a commitment to ensuring that the negative environmental impact of the Games is minimised and that they are completely consumption neutral. The Games will focus on waste management, forestation, anti-litter campaigns, sustainable transport, use of renewable energy sources and efficient water management. Towards this end, the OC is partnering with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) which will advice the OC on all matters pertaining to environment-friendly measures.

A Commonwealth Games Green Council has been formed with Dr. Shashi Tharoor, former United Nations Under Secretary-General, as its Chairman. Members include Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, MP & Chairman, CWG Delhi 2010; Mr. Prabjot Sodhi from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); Mr. V. Subramaniam, former Secretary, Ministry of Renewable Energy; and Mr. Ranjit Balthakur from Nature First.
