Games preparation not to miss deadline: Kalmadi

NEW DELHI, Nov 6: Brushing aside concerns that 2010 Commonwealth Games preparation may miss deadline, Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi on Friday reiterated that Delhi would host a successful Games next year.

"Everyone can see the amount of work going on for the next year’s Commonwealth Games in the city. Delhi would be ready to host the Games with all the facilities completing on time," Kalmadi said.

The Organising Committee has faced criticism from different quarters for the tardy preparations of 2010 Games but Kalmadi said all the facilities required for the quadrennial mega event, including medical, will be ready on time.

"The medical facilities in the city are also being upgraded for the Commonwealth Games and the hospitals are also getting ready. With enough government support we are moving in right direction," Kalmadi said inaugurating an international congress on sports medicine here.

Emphasising the importance of scientific training and medical backup for international athletes, Kalmadi, who is also the Indian Olympic Association chief, said the country has started making strides towards that direction.

"Today the scientific approach and medical backup are very important factors for an athlete. India has also started taking steps to provide the same to the players," Kalmadi said.

"I would like to thank Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) for giving Rs 700 crore for the facilities like training for athletes, recruitment of foreign coaches," Kalmadi added.

More than 600 sports medicine experts, including 70 from abroad, are participating in the three-day conference named Sports Medcon 2009.

"With the Commonwealth Games on the offing, this kind of initiative would help the cause as hosting the CWG involves a lot of dope and injury related aspects," said PSM Chandran, President of the Indian Federation of Sports Medicine (IFSM).

Among others, Sports Authority of India (SAI) director general Sayan Chatterjee, 2010 Games Technical Conduct Committee chairman KP Singh Deo and Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia were also present on the occasion. (PTI)
