India can win a lot of tennis medals: Mahesh Bhupathi

CHENNAI: Indian tennis players can win a lot of medals at stake in the Commonwealth Games says Mahesh Bhupathi, the 35-year-old ace who has 11 Grand Slam doubles titles under his belt.

“It has become big for us because it is being played in our backyard for the first time. Personally, I feel India have a huge chance of winning quite a few medals at the Commonwealth Games,” he told The Telegraph. “Actually, we can sweep all the medals at stake (in tennis), but for that we have to play well and plan properly,” he said.

Mahesh Bhupathi believes that his combination with Leander Paes remains India’s best chance for a gold in the doubles of the Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi later this year. “It is still Leander and I who have the best chance of winning gold,” he said when asked about the possibility of his pairing up with Rohan Bopanna.

Leander Paes, who has 10 Grand Slam doubles titles, and Mahesh Bhupathi won three Grand Slam titles together.
