The XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi are scheduled from 3 October to 14 October, 2010. This is the best time to travel to Delhi, which has average daytime temperatures of 22°C (71.5°F) in October. Commonwealth leader says Delhi 2010 will be turning point for India

NEW DELHI: The Commonwealth Secretary-General Mr. Kamlesh Sharma today said the Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi is already a huge achievement and would be a greater achievement once the Games are over besides being the turning point for India as a nation.

Mr. Sharma was talking to the top brass of Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi at its headquarters after he sat through presentations about the preparations for the Games. Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi Chairman Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, MP, and his team updated Mr. Sharma on the progress made.

Mr. Kalmadi said it was an honour to have the Commonwealth Secrtary-General in the headquarters of the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi. “I am glad you were present at the launch of the Queen’s Baton Relay 2010 Delhi in Buckingham Palace and we count on your support,” he told Mr. Sharma.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General said the Games will be a great Indian show. “I am glad I came here. Of course, one has a theoretical view that these things must be very complex but it is only when you visit a place where things are being done that the magnitude of the task really hits you,” he said. “I wish you all strength and success. I am sure it will be a Games that India is going to be proud of and the Commonwealth, too.”

Mr. Sharma hoped the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi would have a larger benefit to the Commonwealth societies by encouraging sports culture as a whole, not just in terms of medal-winning sport but also by inspiring younger people in the villages or towns and everywhere else to take up sport. “We should make it into a Commonwealth strength,” he said.

I always say that it was the turning point for the Commonwealth in many ways when runners from the Caribbean nations beat the United States in the 100m dash – for gold medal and silver medal. This is an example of how much achievement there is inherent in our societies,” he said.

Leander Paes urges Commonwealth teams to experience India

NEW DELHI: Indian tennis ace Leander Paes has urged New Zealand and other members of the Commonwealth Games Federation to overcome security concerns and send their teams to the Commonwealth Games to be held here later this year.

Leander Paes told the Sunday News in an interview during the Auckland`s Open that he believed every possible step would be taken to ensure the safety of athletes and appealed to Commonwealth governments to trust India’s efforts. “I`m sure everything that`s possible will be done, so please, come forward and experience my country,” he said.

“There will be high security measures taken at the Commonwealth Games because it`s like an Olympics or Asian Games,” Leander Paes said. “I am sure the security will be fantastic. India is a great country, we have a lot to show for ourselves as far as tourism, business and sport goes.”

He said the level of threat in India was manageable. “I am 100 per cent certain that it will be safe,” he said. “Anti-terrorism security is everywhere in the world… This generation around the world lives under constant threat. It`s all about how you look at it, security and the way we approach such situations.”
