The countdown to the Commonwealth Games has begun. Organising Committee, Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 will be unveiling the prototype of Queen’s Baton on the eve of Commonwealth Day, which is celebrated annually on the second Monday of March to signify the post-colonial relationship between the nations of the former British empire. The event will be held on the lawns of India Gate. The prototype of the Queen’s Baton will be unveiled by Lt. Governor of Delhi, Shri Tejendra Khanna. The Queen’s Baton has been specially designed in a manner which is unique since it represents not only the diversity of India but also the participation of every Indian through the soil of each state of India which has been embedded on the Baton. The Baton, represents the resilient spirit of Indians, and their Prowess, in the field of technology and IT which also finds place in the Baton as it is designed to contain,

LED lights that will illuminate the colour of the flag of each of the 71 Commonwealth Nations through which it travels through

In the Commonwealth Games, the Queen’s Baton carries the Queen’s Message. The Queen’s Baton will travel all the Commonwealth Nations. In India it will scale the length and breath of our Nation showcasing Indian Cultural Heritage amalgamating with Indian Sports. The Queen’s Baton will be officially launched by the Queen from Buckingham Palace in November 2009. The cultural extravaganza will be an unforgettable evening of visual delight which will include, a giant water screen, a show by the ‘Flying Angels’, performers of Toll Theatre from UK, delightful dances of celebration by leading Kathak and Bharatanatyam artistes and a contemporary dance troupe thrilling fusion of dance and gymnastic movements even as the LED screens bring alive the landmarks of Delhi and a fiesta of sound, movement and colour by over 200 artistes from all over the country. The pulsating finale accompanied by spectacular fireworks will also include numbers by eminent pop singers. The evening is a MUST SEE event celebrating the spirit of sports encompassing the spirit of the Games, the spirit of the Commonwealth, the spirit of the Queen’s Baton the catalyst for development of Delhi’s infrastructure and the spirit of the people of India!
