OC-AFI workshop prepares track and field technical officials for Delhi 2010

NEW DELHI: A three-day Athletics Officials Workshop is being conducted by the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi and Athletics Federation of India, commenced at the Organising Committee Headquarter here. The workshop will train a pool of nearly 200 technical officials for track and field events for the Commonwealth Games.

“The workshop is a reflection of the commitment of the Organising Committee towards enhancing the knowledge of the technical officials in India across various sports,” Organising Committee Chairman Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, MP, said. “Such workshops are being conducted from time to time to ensure that we conduct the Commonwealth Games spotlessly.”

International Association of Athletics Federation Council Member Mr. Bill Bailey, who is the Technical Delegate for Commonwealth Games, and International Para-Olympic Committee member Mr. Tarek Souei, the Technical Delegate for Para Sport at the Commonwealth Games, are conducting the workshop. The topics covered include new rules, roles, protocols, duties, reporting, sports equipment, venue and store, etc.

“The workshop is very well attended by officials from all over India,” Mr. Bailey said. “It is beginning of the process of training various teams of judges and officials to organise and conduct big competition. The participants were very enthusiastic and cooperative. We will be following it up with opportunities for further training and practice.”

Former National high jump record holder N Annavi was all praise for the workshop. “We are getting very important information for the total conduct of the event,” he said. “We are informed about our specific duties and systemization of the games conduct as per international standards.”

Former National triple jumper Md. Nizamuddin echoed that. “Mr. Bailey is very experienced and we are drawing from his experience. We have already 10 workshops under Mr. C K Valson and learnt lot about the changing rules, their adaptation and implementation on ground. The participants for the workshop have been selected after a rigorous process and this is for the first time that we are conducting lAAf’s Level 1 exam for six groups of 20 each.”

The workshop will conclude on Sunday and all participants will be officiating in the National Cross Country Championships to be held here on January 31.
