NEW DELHI: Saluting the undying spirit of cancer survivors, Shera, the affable mascot of the Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi, flagged off the annual Cancer Awareness Walk organised by the Indian Cancer Society on Sunday. Dr. M. S. Gill, Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports was the Chief Guest at the event.
The Walk is organised each year to spread awareness about cancer. The walk aims to drive home the two most important aspects about cancer: That it is curable when detected early and that there is life after cancer.
Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi staff extended their support to the fight against cancer by participating in the walk in large numbers. Over 3,000 people including cancer survivors and their families, patients and families, children suffering from cancer and their parents, doctors, nurses, NCC cadets, Armed Forces personnel and members of Indian Cancer Society and other cancer organisations like Roko Cancer and Global Cancer Concern India participated.
“Besides creating awareness, the Indian Cancer Society gets young people to meet and walk with cancer patients during the walk, so that they see them as ‘People like us’,” said Mrs. Jyotsna Govil, Additional Secretary, Indian Cancer Society.
Shera spread the message of togetherness, joy and belonging in the true spirit of the Commonwealth Games. He brought a lot of cheer to those gathered at the Air Force Bal Bharati School and lighted up the faces of all children as he mingled with everyone. The participants witnessed a lot of excitement and the school came alive with cheers, claps, smiles from everyone who were surprised by his visit.
